Apple is apparently working on iPhone without a connection

Instead of switching to USB-C at some point, Apple plans to use wireless solutions for the iPhone from 2021.

Many users hope that Apple will quickly replace the Lightning with a USB-C port on the iPhone. It may happen quite differently: Leaker Jon Prosser, known for his relatively high hit rate, wrote on Twitter on May 13, 2020 that, according to his information, there should be at least one iPhone in 2021 that will get by without any external connections. Lightning should be installed in the devices expected at the end of 2020.

A smartphone without a connection could be powered by a Qi charger. Or like the Apple Watch with a magnetic holder or something similar that has not been connected from the start.

Advantage of a wireless mobile device: The interior would be easier to protect from water and dust. And there would be one component with less wear. The Lightning sockets and contacts are not so seldom broken, for example by torn plugs that fell out.

Many users should only connect their iPhone to a cable for charging with energy. Updates for the operating system and apps are uploaded online, data is transferred via the cloud.

Since the penultimate generation, Apple has only installed USB-C on the two iPad Pros instead of Lightning — but the devices are also intended for professionals who want to transfer large amounts of photos or video files from a camera. Many Android smartphones use USB-C.

Prosser writes that he expects an iPhone without an external connection in 2021 — but “they may all be disconnected”. In another post on Twitter, he writes that Apple has the prototype of a charger, in which fewer charging coils than in a previously announced but then not released model and an A11 chip for temperature management are installed.

A few days ago there was a big leak from Prosser about the iPhones planned for late 2020, writes the blog Apple Insider, among others. Also there it was said that Lightning will be installed for the time being. Apple is said to want to offer four base models, namely an iPhone 12, an iPhone 12 Max, an iPhone 12 Pro and an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

There is currently no current counterpart to the iPhone 12 Max, which should offer a display with a diagonal of 6.1 inches. An interesting innovation in the Pro models is the support of frame rates up to 120 Hz. Apple has not commented on any of the leaks.
